I think that many companies frequently focus on a magic set of metrics for a new venture, such as the cash curve. However, hiring the right people to run the venture is even more important. It is common practice that large companies ask existing internal candidates to run the new venture, Instead they should be looking at different skills and talents. Marc Andreessen in his blog describes in a no-nonsense manner what qualities are required in hiring a person to manage a new venture.
